Changes to Leave of Absence (Holiday) penalty notices and fines.

Dear parents & carers,
Following guidance from Newcastle upon Tyne Local Authority, I am writing to inform you that all holiday taken during term time will be subject to referral for penalty notices (fines). Attendance is a national focus for the Department for Education, Local Authorities and schools as many children are missing their legal entitlement to education.
At English Martyrs’, we do understand that going away during school holidays can be expensive and we also understand that sometimes there are exceptional circumstances whereby children will not be in school.
However, holidays during term time are having a significant impact on children’s education both nationally and locally.
These changes will come into effect for Leave of Absences submitted from Monday 30th October.
Punctuality
The school day begins promptly at 8.50am, therefore all pupils are expected to be in class ready to learn at this time. Can we please urge families not to leave entering school until the last minute.
The school gates on Nethbery Drive will be closed promptly at 8.50am. Children trying to come through the gates at this time will be asked to enter school via the Beaufront Gardens entrance and be marked as LATE.
We will continue to support all families where attendance or punctuality is of concern.
