Vindolanda visit

Year 4

Visit to Vindolanda

Our Year 4 pupils will be taking part in an educational visit to Vindolanda on Friday 14th June 2024.  We will be leaving school at 9am travelling by private coach, and will be back in time for the normal end of day.  All pupils will need a packed lunch for the visit, and the kitchen will provide a free school lunch for those eligible.  Please ensure your child has their school water bottle and is dressed in school uniform including suitable footwear and an outdoor jacket.

We will begin our visit with a tour around the Roman army museum, then travel onto Vindolanda where the children will have their lunch in the enclosed courtyard.

After lunch the children will be shown a 3D film introducing Roman life and what they will find at the site.

Following this, they will be split into two classes for a teaching and learning session in the Roman classroom .

Here, a virtual teacher will help their class to learn more about the Romans and what they did for us. We will complete some activities together with a focus on 'what the Romans have left for us.'

We will finish by walking around the Roman wall. The ancient remains of Vindolanda which was first built by the Roman army before Hadrian’s Wall and became an important construction and garrison base for the Wall, a Hadrian’s Wall fort in its own right. It was demolished and completely re-built no fewer than nine times. Each re-build, each community, leaving their own distinctive mark on the landscape and archaeology of the site. Here they can see the ruins of the Roman settlement where the soldiers lived and worked.

The total cost of the trip will be £18, which has been subsidised by school and we kindly ask if parents/carers  could make a voluntary contribution of £5 towards the visit.

All payments need to be made online via Ipayimpact and the account to be credited will be named 'Y4 Vindolanda'.

If you do not have an online account please contact the school office at office@emcps.co.uk or on 0191 274 7463 for further information.
